Punji Traps
Who: The side that had the Punji traps were the NVA and the NC. These were the people that fought for the North Vietnam army.
What: The Punji trap was a trap that was put into the tunnels that were dug by the NVA
When: The punji traps were used during the beginning of the war in 1966 and was used throughout the duration of the war.
Where: These traps were put into the tunnels that were into hills and would slow down, hurt, and even kill any Soldier that went into these tunnels not knowing where these traps are.
Why: These traps were used to cause severe pain and damage to any individual that walked over them. This was a big defensive unit used with the NVA and NC during the duration of the Vietnam war.
How: These traps were made by spikes of wood or metal and were camouflaged with leaves and grass and could cause severe damage and even death.
American soldier Response to punji traps: The soldiers during this time would enter the tunnels with a handgun and a knife and a kit to disarm the punji traps. These traps were very hard to find and when disarmed could still be a threat. The pit falls are an example because they fall directly into a punji trap. This was how the soldiers would react to the punji traps and would hopefully disarm them before any harm comes to the troops.
